Exclusive: “Grey’s Anatomy” Star Sara Ramirez Talks Romance, Kissing Scenes and Addictions
Written by Eric on March 7th, 2009

Mexican actress and Grey’s Anatomy star Sara Ramirez, 33, opened up to Vivo Por TiVo about her changing onscreen love interests, making out with Jessica Capshaw, her favorite TV shows and more…

Your character, Callie Torres, wasn’t always a lesbian on Grey’s…so why the transition? Was it a ratings ploy, or are there not enough worthy men at Seattle Grace?

[Laughs.] There are certainly many eligible men (at Seattle Grace) so I don’t think it’s that. The lesbian storyline is an interesting storyline about two women who befriend each other and fall for each other. The writers really wanted to represent a true story, and the story is based on a true relationship about two real women.

Callie has been with both boys and girls, so do you consider her gay or bisexual?

Callie is exploring herself and her sexuality, and I don’t want to label it because the whole point is she’s an open person. She is on the search for love on many levels. She wants to find someone she clicks with, but at the same time, she’s on this journey with herself. We are all searching for ourselves in other people, whether we know it or not.

Do you think your character speaks for an underrepresented group?

There is a large group that’s not represented on television the group that falls somewhere in the middle of straight and gay. That group is looked down on, because people say, “you can’t be in-between. You have to pick one or the other.” I hope that people who can identify with being in that position where you are attracted to somebody’s spirit and personality as opposed to their gender I hope that we can reach out to them and say, ‘hey, we are representing you right now.’ Hopefully we can touch someone and help them come to terms with who they really are.

Callie recently shared a steamy bathroom kiss with Arizona. Are they going to become an item?

Callie and Arizona might be starting a little sumthin, sumthin. But it’s still in the VERY early stages, so I really don’t know what’s going to happen.

Are you addicted to any TV shows?

I am! I love Mad Men & Nip Tuck.

The internet’s abuzz with rumors that your Grey’s co-stars Patrick Dempsey, Katharine Heigl and T.R. Knight are leaving the show at the end of this season? Do you know anything about that?

Hmm. I know what the rumors are. But these are my co-workers and colleagues. I think I just have to respect their privacy.

Please tell us you’re not going anywhere.

No, I’m not. I’m playing my dream role right now. I’m a female orthopedic surgeon! How cool is that?

Tony Award winner gives $20,000 to alma mater
Written by Eric on March 1st, 2009

I have always thought that Sara was so sweet and I have always had so much respect for her, but now that I’ve read this article, I can tell you that I have even more respect for her than I have had! I think it is so generous of her to donate that much money!>

Tony Award winner Sara Ramirez will donate $20,000 to her alma mater, the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, the school announced yesterday.

Ramirez won the 2005 Tony for best featured actress in a musical for her role as the Lady of the Lake in “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” She is a 1993 graduate of SCPA. She attended the school from fourth through 12th grades.

In a statement, Ramirez said that SCPA “played a huge role in where and who I am today, so I would like to take this time to give a little something back.”

The donation is earmarked for the drama, music and dance departments and the piano fund.

Ramirez graduated from The Juilliard School in New York City. She currently has a role on the television show “Grey’s Anatomy.” C.M.
