What was it like working with Sara Ramirez on Grey’s Anatomy?

It was a dream. We’ve been friends for about 13 years, but we’ve never had the opportunity to work together, so I was thrilled to get the chance to work with a friend I’ve held in such high esteem. I’ve been a fan since the moment I saw her on stage in Capeman on Broadway back in 1997, when I was doing Rent in NY. We had an amazing time on set and she could not have been more generous and supportive to me. My love affair with Sara Ramirez continues, stronger than ever!

Who are you playing on tonight’s episode?

I play Kyle, a man who rushes to Seattle Grace hospital with his partner after a tragic accident on what is supposed to be the happiest day of our lives — the day we signed our domestic partnership papers.

As one of the first Latinos to play gay on television, what do you think of Sara Ramirez’s Lesbian character, Callie? Is she a good role model for gays?

Callie is one of the most important gay characters on TV right now. Callie is not just her sexuality or her race. She is a highly regarded expert in her field, and a complex three-dimensional woman. I believe her to be an outstanding role model for the LGBT and Latino communities. It’s a groundbreaking role.

We know you enjoyed working with Grey’s EP, Shonda Rhimes. Are there any plans for you to work for her on another show in the future?

I would jump at the opportunity. Alas, at the moment there are no immediate plans to do so. I hope to, one day, be blessed with another opportunity. I’m a huge fan of all of Shonda’s work and I know she knows I would be at her service, if ever she required it.

Callie and Arizona?

“The relationship takes the steps you take as you get deeper involved with someone,” hints Sara Ramirez (Callie). “But Callie’s been married, so that could pose an issue.” Adds Jessica Capshaw (Arizona), “I don’t see Arizona entering into anything that’s not ironclad.”
